08/29/2017 the happiest event took place in our park - the lady-firaffe Marie gave the world a healthy, spotted son-giraffe.
The birth took place under the supervision of veterinary specialists of the zoo and, fortunately, everything went well, on time and without complications. Marie's pregnancy lasted 15 (!) Months.
It should be noted that the birth process is not an easy test for a baby. Giraffes give birth to cubs in a standing position and the newborn falls to the ground from a height of about one and a half meters!
In the wild, giraffes for this period settle in dense tall grass, which softens the blow for the baby. In our case, the park staff prepared a thick ball of soft hay in advance. The blow, as a rule, does not harm the baby, but forces him to take the first breath.
After the birth, the giraffe mother began to lick her baby right away. In less than an hour, the baby giraffe was already able to climb on its still fragile legs.
